"What you think awakens your feelings and emotions"

We all know the feeling of being down. I certainly do. But as I hate that feeling, I’m always trying to get it out of my system within a few minutes or hours. Sometimes you can’t describe the feeling, you just can’t describe why you are feeling down. You just do.

This feeling can be frustrating, I know. But the longer you are stuck in the feeling, the longer it will take you to get out of it and feel great again. The longer you stick to that negative feeling, the deeper you will sink.

Let me entrust you a secret on how your mind works and how you can switch your emotions.

You know, actually we think in images. You don’t believe me? Well, think about your pet. Your dog or your cat for instance. Hey, you can see it right? We will all have a different image in mind. One will see a brown cat or dog, or black. The race will be different. Has it got long or short hair? …
Let me set another example. Think about your living room. You know exactly where your couch is, the television, … just everything. You project images on the screen of your mind. So it means we can send our thoughts. We can change images when we want and as often as we want to.
Actually, we have two parts in our brain, our consciousness and our unconsciousness. When you think - and I’m not talking about what to eat tonight - I mean really thinking, you use the part where you see everything in images. Once you start thinking, you evoke certain feelings, emotions. That’s were your unconsciousness comes into action. That part of the brain is where you store all memories, feelings.
So, long story short, when you think positively you get positive emotions and feelings, so you feel happy. And guess what. It works both ways. When you’re having negative thoughts, you will have a bad mood, you’ll feel depressed.
You now know that you can just change the images in your mind. You know that you can choose the images in your mind. So why not just invoke a nice thought when you’re feeling down. It’s as simple as that. Consequently your emotions will shift from negative to positive. Also realize that however your feelings are, you radiate those feelings. Your body language just reveals your mood. People will notice it and it’s quite obvious that your results will depend on what you feel.

If you start your day with only positive thinking from the start on, the rest of your day will run smoothly. The energy you radiate will bounce back at you. The same applies for negative energy. You attract what you sparkle. And believe me when I say that it’s a vicious circle. You give a sign to the universe that that feeling is exactly what you want. What do you expect to get in return?

Now let me entrust you a story. One I lived and experienced from two different angles.

During my time as a Sales Representative, I got to visit a lot of “C-level” people. I just hated meetings at nine am in Brussels. I knew I had to start my day with traffic jams and be in the car for at least two hours to get there.  So I invariably listened to the traffic information on the radio each morning when I got up. If there were already jams at six in the morning, I got all fucked up. My day started in a hurry, I got stomach cramps, I became surly and in a bad mood. That mood just continued to haunt me all day. I didn’t get to my appointment in time, my meeting was not great, although I damn well knew my product through and through. The person I was meeting was just a pain in the ass … And as that meeting didn’t go well – guess what – the next one didn’t run smoothly as well. Results were disappointing and I started to doubt myself, although I knew I was good at my job. Little by little I started to hate my job. Not the people at the firm but just my job …
I didn’t quite like those days. That bad mood just kept sticking my ribs till the evening. I got home and started complaining about my day. No happy stories to tell. On top of that I had the household to do, cooking, helping kids with homework, …  I was relieved to go to bed at night.
But hey, I was raising two kids on my own and bills had to be paid, so I only had one choice: hang in there.

Perhaps you’ve been, or are, in a similar situation. Maybe not as a salesperson but as a student, truckdriver, teacher, … Perhaps you recognize the situation.


Here’s the flip side of my story.
The day I got to change my behaviour and the way I reacted to certain circumstances, that day my life changed. I started dealing with these kind of ‘setbacks’ in a totally different way:

The alarm clock set off, I got up and listened to the traffic information. And although they announced the traffic nuisance, I hit the shower with a big smile on my face. I imagined a perfect day ahead. No delays, good meetings and a lot of order forms signed. I got into my car, played great music and started singing. I didn’t care what others thought when they saw me singing like crazy behind the wheel in a traffic jam. I felt genuinely happy and nothing could take that good mood away from me. The appointments I had went well, I got to sell  a lot and had great people I could add to my network. When I got home after twelve hours of work I still felt happy, packed with energy.
My household didn’t bother me anymore. On the contrary. I enjoyed the time with my kids more than ever, quality time together.
I could enjoy my work again. It didn’t bother me that I had to fill in the CRM system and prepare the meetings for the following day. I over performed. My target was always in reach. Every month was a full bonus month. So my financial situation improved as well.
All that by simply switching my thoughts as soon as I got out of bed!

One day I was visiting a potential customer when all of the sudden he asked me if I wanted to join his team. Not as a Sales Representative but as a Sales Manager. Lead the Sales team. Imagine what that did to me. I felt appreciated and rewarded for my hard work. An opportunity that just crossed my path by being me and radiate positivity. Needless to say, I have accepted the proposal. I had suddenly, totally unexpected, climbed the ladder in the business world.

As I told before, what you think awakens your feelings and emotions, brings them to the surface. You can’t hide those emotions, so you act upon them. Those actions bring results. Results that affect different areas of life.

Let’s summarize and realize what happened to me back then. By switching my thoughts into a positive direction, I just felt happy every day. Nothing, no tiny little setback could beat me out off my course. My sales figures increased, I was pleasant at home and to my kids, my financial situation improved, I got a new challenge as a Sales Manager, I got a bigger car and my self-confidence just improved. Nothing could hold me back. No more fear for the unknown. Always push yourself to the next limit and remember to keep on that good mood, all day every day. And if you would feel that your emotions are disappointing you, remember to change your thoughts. Just change the image on the screen of your mind into something that makes you feel good.
