“Courage is all we need”
Live life on your own terms is something that has kept me going all my life. You could call it stubbornness or even quirkiness but that’s how I went through life so far. And I don’t intend to do differently.
Oh yes, I could have taken the easy path on several occasions, but I decided to follow my heart, my gut feeling. The consequences were not always that easy, on the contrary. You can call me a striver that only goes for the best. To me, the choices I made, were only to be happy in life.
Sure, I often listened to the opinion and took the advice of others. On several occasions I had people convincing me in making other decisions than those that were initially in my mind. I had a tendency of blaming others when it turned out ‘wrong’. On the other hand, I was always realistic enough to realize that in the end, it was always me who took the final decision and not them. I was the only one to blame. I could have immersed myself in negativity several times and lower my courage, but I did not. It has made me stronger and made me aware of the fact that I always have to follow my own feelings. I somehow always turned the negative into a positive experience and left the past behind me. That’s one of the many secrets. Dare to leave the past behind and step into a new life.
That vicious circle
Not taking that leap forward is one of the reasons why people are stuck in miserable feelings. People who think that their lives are an accumulation of negative experiences. People who need to feel miserable about almost everything crossing their path. They see themselves as doomed and it’s as if they want it to be like that. Even traffic jams or rain can kill their day. There’s always something to bring down their mood. They drag themselves threw life as if it were a big grind.
A few weeks ago somebody sent me a message, saying that he too would love to travel to Thailand. It has been on his bucket list for years. To him I was a lucky woman to be able to have made that trip. When I asked him why he didn’t just go, he had a list of fallacies. He didn’t have a permanent job, already for years. He has a kid and wife. He didn’t have the money. He didn’t have time. His wife is depressed and has no job as well … He just kept on going!
“Ah ok. I get it”, I answered him. “If you want something in life, you just have to go for it. We can all come up with reasons why we can’t do it, but that won’t get you there. Believe in yourself, set your goals and go! It’s as simple as that! It’s you that defines luck in your life”.
He answered that I was probably right and that he would ‘maybe’ make the trip next year or the year after, if all the ‘negative stuff’ had been cleared.
I’m setting this example as it shows how we are. We complain, but we don’t take the bull by the horns. Instead we only see the negative things, we even highlight them. We always find a reason not to do what we really want. It’s as if we want to be stuck in that vicious circle of negativity. We tend to make everything more difficult than it actually is. We are slowing down our lives instead of having the courage to take life and its opportunities with both hands and move on.
Dare to look at the current situation
Know that you can’t pass the line of past and present if you carry the past with you. It needs courage to give up. Giving up on the past doesn’t mean you have to give in. Never give in, but dare to give up on certain things.
We are all anxious to improve our lives, to get the most out our lives. But we often miss the courage to get us moving forward. We are afraid of the unknown and we have a tendency to grab for the things we know and are familiar with. Even if those things are holding us back and make us feel miserable. Sometimes we cannot even explain why we feel bad or depressed. We just don’t feel happy, end of story. Dare to take a leap and look at your life under a magnifying glass. Dare to look at the current situation and evaluate. Don’t be afraid to leave things behind in pursuing your dreams. You might double happiness by giving up and letting go of the past. You will always come back as reborn. Giving up can be the twist you needed in life. It will amaze you what courage can bring to you in the future.
I know, sometimes circumstances can block the path to happiness and make it hard to follow your dreams. Just keep on dreaming and fighting for what you see as your final goal. We all have a warrior who flows through our veins. Go seek for that warrior that you once were as a child. That innocent child that dared to dream fully, unspoiled and pure. That period in life where your courage abounded. You could conquer the world back then. Remember? Well that warrior is still out there. Dare to bring him back out and fight for what you are entitled to!
It takes a lot of courage to take the leap. But only when you do so, you can fully understand life. I believe that everything that crosses your path has a reason, that it’s meant to be.
We all have a role model in life, someone we look up to. Don’t be jealous of what that person has. People we look up to also had their share of setbacks in life but they were, and are, determined to reach their goals. They are convinced of their abilities and they are damned right to do so! We are all born with talent but the search for it doesn’t always run equally smoothly for everybody.
Is it because we ignore the signs we have had in the past? Or is it because we were too afraid to take the leap?
As long as, and only if, we continue to believe in ourselves and have the courage to take the leap we will achieve our goals in life.
